Sermon:  “This (age) and That (age):  Part 2”

Scripture:   2 Thessalonians 3:6-13

Last week’s scripture and sermon focused on how people tend to think of eternal life as a future “age to come”, while Jesus brought the concept of “that age” as a way of living that can transform “this age”.   In the passage this week, Paul is addressing some people who thought of their Christian life as something that would really occur at the return of Christ (that age), and were therefore living in “idleness” in this age — …. What is Paul meaning when he uses the Greek word that is often translated as “idle” (it can also be described as disorderly or disruptive)?   What does it mean to “work” in the church?  I am reminded of Bonhoeffer’s notion of “cheap grace”….. What message does this offer for our “modern age” and how we find meaning (or not) through a work beyond ourselves?

Join us for worship on Sunday, November 17th at 10:30 a.m. and for coffee and fellowship after the service.

Sermon:   “This and That”

Scripture:   Luke 20:27-38

This scripture is often used as Jesus saying something about eternal life — and maybe it is about that, but it is also about something deeper I think.   More importantly for us, however, may be what Jesus is saying about the Presence of God breaking into this life and into all the relationships that we make in this life.  What does it mean to say the Presence of God is breaking into this earthly reality?  How are our relationships transformed?

November 1st is All Saints Day in the Christian calendar, and we will celebrate this occasion at our Sunday worship service on November 3rd.   At this service, I invite you to bring photos or other mementos of friends or family members who have passed away but were (and maybe still are) important to your life.   We will place these photos/mementos in the sanctuary and say a blessing for their lives.  If you feel so inclined, please place a card with an indication of who the person is and their relationship to  you.  The person you wish to have remembered and celebrated need not have passed away recently, but rather is anyone who was special to you in your personal and/or faith development — in other words, a saint of some sort for you.       Blessings upon you this week!    Rev. Allen

Sermon:   Sight and Insight
1st Lesson:   Ephesians 1:15-23
2nd Lesson:   Luke 19:1-10
In preparing one’s mind and heart for this week’s sermon, it is good to note the phrase Paul uses in Ephesians about the “eyes of the heart.”  This phrase was a cultural way in the Greek world for connecting emotions and understanding — they were not separate things.   Interestingly, there is a connection with the story of Zaccheus in Luke, when the scripture tells us he “could not see Jesus”, and then later when it says he “stood up” and revealed his new identity before Jesus and the crowd.   What happened to Zaccheus?  Note the context when he says this to Jesus (imagine all these people crowding his courtyard and house and him providing a dinner for all of the followers of Jesus).  What insights about the work of Christ have been key in your own life?

Join us for worship, which includes Communion, on Sunday, October 3rd at 10:30 a.m. and for coffee and fellowship after the service.

We have a date for the installation service of Rev. Fairfax, so mark your calendars! The service will be at 3:00 p.m. in the sanctuary on Sunday, November 3rd, with a reception to follow. Sunday Worship

Sermon:   “Making ‘I’ Contact”

Luke 18:9-14;   Isaiah 1:10-18

In preparing for this week’s readings, it is good to know that the traditional way to pray in the Jewish temple was to stand with one’s head and eyes looking up to God with hands raised – which is what the Pharisee is doing – and doing it in a public way.   Who was he talking to?  Notice the body language of the tax collector!   Where was he standing?   Who was the tax collector talking to?  Similar to last week’s gospel lesson, this passage is also about prayer, but it is also about making connections, and it is the lesson preparing us for the real-life encounter in Luke 19 between Jesus and Zaccheus (next week’s gospel story).

Join us for worship on Sunday, October 27th at 10:30 a.m. and for coffee and fellowship after the service.

Sunday Worship

Sermon:  “What’s In a Name?”

In the lesson from Luke, we find a judge who resists the pleas of a widow for help against someone who is exploiting her situation.   What does this story tell us about what it means to be faithful Christian?   Why did the judge finally give in to her requests (hint:  the literal translation from the Greek for “wearing out the judge” is “giving me a blackeye”)?  Jacob, in our story from Genesis, also fought with an adversary for a blessing, and through his efforts, received a new name.   What name are we growing into as we walk (and strive) with God?

Sunday Service

Sermon – “Longing for Food, Longing for Life”

Luke 16:19-31; First Timothy 6:6-19

The lectionary brings us this week to the gate of a rich man where we find another man named Lazarus (whose name means “God has helped”).  In the New Revised Standard Version, the translation reads that Lazarus “longed to satisfy his hunger” from the leftovers at the rich man’s table.   Luke uses this same Greek phrase to describe the hunger of the prodigal son in Luke 15:16, and both phrases and contexts suggest Jesus is certainly talking about real physical hunger, but something else as well. What is it that all of us, even those of us who are well fed, “long to satisfy” in our daily lives – be it emotionally, spiritually, physically, etc?   What kind of life does God want us to engage and embrace, both as individuals and in our common life together?  Why is the sharing and consumption of food such an important way of enacting and celebrating God’s presence?

Join us for worship on Sunday, September 29th at 10:30 a.m. and for coffee and fellowship after the service.

World Communion Sunday

On Sunday, October 6th, we will celebrate Communion with other Christians around the world on World Communion Sunday. We will also collect the Peacemaking Offering. This year’s verse for the offering is from 2 Thessalonians 3:16 “…Peace in all times in all ways.” During the next few weeks, the Mission Focus time in the service will show how your gifts to the offering are used in a variety of peacemaking efforts at all levels of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).

Fred Bahnson Spiritual Book Talk

At noon on Sunday, October 6th we will host Fred Bahnson, the Director of the Food, Faith and Religious Leadership Initiative at the School of Divinity at Wake Forest University.  He will do a short talk on his book, SOIL AND SACRAMENT: A Spiritual Memoir of Food and Faith, followed by brief reading, then a question and answer session. Copies of his book will be available for sale. Join us for this lively and informal gathering to hear more about the intersection about faith and food in our lives.  All are welcome – invite you friends and neighbors!

String Theory Benefit Concert

Come hear Clarendon Hill’s Jennifer Herzig play with her string quartet, String Theory, as they perform a benefit concert, along with Hanna’s Hearts of Hope. All net proceeds go to Make-A-Wish Foundation (Massachusetts and R.I.) The 2:00 p.m. concert on Sunday, October 6th, in the church sanctuary, will be followed by a silent auction and a reception. They will be performing Ravel’s String Quartet, jazz arrangements by Chris Welch and will have duets with Hanna. Tickets for adults are $12.00 in advance ($15.00 at the door) and $5.00 for kids. Sunday Worship

In our gospel lesson for Sunday, we have the story of a rich man commending a dishonest steward.   It’s a very unusual (and difficult) parable to understand in our modern world, and one that has led to many different interpretations of what Jesus meant when he told his disciples to “make friends for yourselves by means of unrighteous mammon…” Why does Jesus give such advice?   What is going on in the lives of those who first heard the parable?  Why are so many people indebted to this “rich man”?  Why is the steward/manager commended!? Please join us for worship on Sunday, September 22nd at 10:30 a.m. and for refreshments and fellowship after the service.  The scripture reading from the G0spel is Luke 16: 1-13.  The call to worship is Psalm 113, while the Old Testament lessons are Amos 8:4-7 and Jeremiah 8: 18 – 9:1. The title of Rev. Fairfax’s sermon is “The Justice of Injustice”.

Prayer Group

There will be a prayer meeting after coffee hour on this coming Sunday, September 22nd in the Green Room. Jesus said, ‘When two or three are gathered in my name, I am there.” Bring your prayers about whatever joys or concerns you may have on your mind and in your heart. All are welcome.

World Communion Sunday

On Sunday, October 6th, we will celebrate Communion with other Christians around the world on World Communion Sunday. We will also collect the Peacemaking Offering.
